It’s been a pretty dull pre-season for me since my team got knocked out in the first round of the comp  and even our challenge games are being relocated due to bad weather and then cancelled… due to bad weather. That comedy of errors aside, I’ll attempt the impossible and create some interest in the NAB Cup Grand Final by putting some bread on it.

The bet is as follows - A pinky* on the Saints by less than 39 points @ 2.40.

There’s not much to say about my reasoning behind this bet, it is in reality a pretty safe wager, and I have to admit my brain finds it very hard to show any interest in the NAB cup, so I’ve gone with my gut on this one. The Saints are a quality side – after their GF loss year it’s easy to forget they won 20 games in the home and away season – I rate it the most dominant season by a side since Bombers ’00. No doubt they aren’t quite at full strength tomorrow night (Hayes and Gardiner are big outs), and they’re probably a little underdone given the shortened pre-season of a grand finalist, but a team as good as the Saints sometimes just can’t help but win.

This is not to say I don’t rate the Dogs. They’ve clearly found something they’ve been missing in Large, Unpleasant, Scuttling Barry Hall and I rate them a lock for the top four this year. But they do rely on a few more old heads than St Kilda do, and this time of year you don’t get the best out of your veterans. They’re also a little less robotic than the Saints, and while that might be a good thing when the passion is high in the heat of real battle it doesnt all go augur well for the pre-season, when despite what they say, surely the players hearts aren’t really in it.

So it’s the Saints to win the who cares cup and I pray to Vossy that the next two weeks pass quickly so we can finally get some REAL footy happening!

*A pinky is a five dollar note, named because it is the denomination of Australian currency shortest in length, like the pinky finger of the fingers on the hand.
